Aurora was founded independently of Chicago in 1834 but the outward growth of the larger city has nearly caught up to Aurora, making it part of the area colloquially known as Chicagoland. The city prides itself on its self-sufficiency and unique identity, however. It was one of the first cities in the country to implement an electric street lighting system and is now the main economic center for the Fox Valley area. With a population of 170,000, Aurora is the second largest city in Illinois.

Once a manufacturing powerhouse, Aurora turned out everything from railroad ties to organic diapers. Today, however, the city's economy has expanded to include a variety of other industries including retail shopping, technological research, food service, health care and education. There is one small university in the city and two hospitals, but the pride and joy of the area is the Fox Valley Mall.

Historical preservation is a popular pursuit in Aurora, IL. Many older downtown buildings and homes have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and artifacts from the city's past have been preserved in the Aurora Historical Society Museum and the David L. Pierce Art and History Center. Sports are another popular pastime in the city, especially golf, fastpitch softball, basketball, and football. Scores of people turn out to watch games played by Aurora University and local high schools.
