Aurora, Illinois is located on the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor, which is located on I-88, in the Chicago area, and west. This corridor is comprised of many fortune 500 companies, such as Microsoft, Boeing, Motorola, and U.S. Robotics, and research institutions, such as the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
Aurora also has a rich tradition in the manufacturing industry. Caterpillar has a major plant in Aurora, where some of the world's finest construction and mining equipment is produced, as well as large diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. There are over 150 manufacturers in the Aurora area, employing a large portion of the population.
The unemployment rate as of February 2005 is 6.3%, and on a decreasing trend.
